Faculty Development, Recognition, and Information
MTSU is committed to welcoming new faculty and providing all faculty with on-going support for continued professional growth and development as they embark on their MTSU career and throughout the various stages of their career. The University also recognizes faculty and their outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service throughout. This information is divided into three sections:
Faculty Development: MTSU’s Policy 203 outlines the Faculty Development policy. Faculty Development opportunities are linked in that section below.
Faculty Recognition: Recognition of faculty also occurs in a variety of ways such as through awards, recognition at University events, and through News and Media Relations. Recognition opportunities are discussed in the section below.

I. Faculty Development
- Faculty Development Planning and Consultation Private, confidential consulting for faculty interested in working on a formal development plan for teaching, research, and service activities; also, consulting on how best to balance your teaching, research, and service activities. Contact ltanditc@mtsu.edu to schedule a meeting.
- Faculty Fellows Program The Academy of Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow program is a teaching and professional development opportunity designed to work with your specific and unique needs. Although it is geared toward tenure-track faculty, the program is open to all faculty members regardless of rank or status.
- Faculty Learning Communities A Faculty Learning Community (or FLC) is a group of interdisciplinary faculty who engage in an active, collaborative, year-long program. Each FLC focuses on researching and testing a scholarly and pedagogical topic that is important to the larger academic community.
- Faculty Leadership Development Institute (FLDI) is a year-long faculty development opportunity that is limited to a small group who will be given the opportunities to reflect on their strengths and shortcomings relative to an administrative career; be introduced to various leadership roles; cultivate core leadership skills; develop and capitalize on a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; provide an opportunity to demonstrate preparation by completing a self-led leadership project; and complete a leadership statement and final assessment
- Internal Faculty Grants All internal faculty grants are designed to promote faculty development. They are offered for Research and Creative Activity, Teaching, Service, Travel and other areas.
- Non-Instructional Assignment Grants The purposes of non-instructional assignments are to contribute to the professional growth of the faculty; improve the teaching and curriculum across the University; and enhance scholarship and academic excellence of the University in ways that cannot be accomplished under the constraints of regular workload assignment.
- Non-Instructional Workload Units (Reassignment from Teaching) On the recommendation of a faculty member’s Department Chair ( 3 WU) and Dean (6 WU), and with the approval of the Provost, non-instructional workload may be granted for specific reasons.
- Travel Support for Professional Development There are several opportunities for faculty to receive support for professional development that requires travel. The General Education English Faculty Development Grant, Access and Diversity funds, Women and Gender Studies Travel Grants, and the Faculty Professional Development Travel Grant are available for faculty who meet the requirements.
- Tuition Benefit Faculty are eligible to enroll in one credit course per term at any State of Tennessee public postsecondary institution, with fees waived for the employee, on a space available basis.
- Workshops and Events sponsored by the LT&ITC A variety of workshops and events are offered each semester. Other services include syllabus and course design consultation.
II. Faculty Recognition
- Faculty Awards MTSU sponsors several internal faculty awards such as Career Achievement, Distinguished Research Awards, Outstanding Teaching, and Outstanding Public Service. Internal and external awards are listed at https://faculty.mtsu.edu/awards/ Faculty awards are presented at University Convocation.
- News and Media Relations maintains a list of faculty experts. Contact their office to be added to this list. They also highlight faculty through news stories.
- Annual Fall Faculty Meeting– All faculty are expected to participate in the Annual Fall Faculty meeting traditionally held the Thursday morning before the first day of classes for the fall semester. Faculty awards are presented at the end of the Annual Fall Faculty meeting including the Career Achievement award.
- University Convocation traditionally held the weekend before the first day of fall classes. Convocation marks the official opening of the academic year, and welcomes new students to MTSU. Faculty are recognized at Convocation.
- Commencement / Graduation – Faculty members are selected by their department chairs and are expected to participate in commencement exercises which are held in May, August, and December. Faculty members provide their own academic regalia. Faculty are recognized at Commencement.
III. Additional Information for Faculty
- Faculty Meetings – Faculty members are expected to attend all scheduled and called faculty meetings. The Annual Fall Faculty meeting and conferences in individual departments are held before the opening of the fall semester. It is important that every faculty member be present. In the event it is necessary to be absent from a meeting, arrangements should be made in the office of the department.
